Sonja is FÍA's new lawyer
FÍA welcomes Sonja Bjarnadóttir as she begins work as FÍA's new lawyer, replacing Erna Á. Mathiesen as Erna moves on to further studies in Oslo, Norway. Sonja graduated from the Reykjavík University in 2008, and comes to us from the Competition Authority where she has worked
for the past 11 years. „There are many interesting projects to engage with and I am excited to start work here. I look forward to this new challenge and am now delving into on-going cases and and the work ahead,“ says Sonja who has good knowledge and experience with European law and negotiation law as well as extensive work experience that will directly benefit the FÍA pilots.
B737 Max Summit
In March 2019, regulators and airlines around the world grounded the B737 Max passenger aircraft after two nearly-new aircraft tragically crashed less than five months apart. IFALPA President Captain Jack Netskar provides an Editorial on the B737 Max Summit in Montreal.
FÍA newsletter for July is out
The July version of the FÍA newsletter has now been published. It is written in both Icelandic and English.
Pension Fund Election Results
The e-voting for the Pension Fund (EFÍA) board were concluded on Tuesday, 4. June at 12:00.
Participation was good as 41.55% of the Pension Fund members submitted their vote. Sturla Ómarsson and Kjartan Jónsson were elected as members of the board, and Ingvar Mar Jónsson was elected as an alternate member.

New lawyer for FÍA
FÍA is now looking to hire a new union lawyer. FÍA's lawyer plays an important role in the union's operations, guarding the interests of its members and working closely with the Board. See more about what the position requires, qualifictions and application process, here below. (It is in Icelandic as the position requires a degree in Icelandic law and proficiency in Icelandic).
How's your running style?
Ready for a jog? The educational fund has arranged for a running style course with Þorbergur Ingi Jónsson, one of Iceland's best runners with many country records on his back. The course is held on 21. May, from 12:00-14:00 at the FÍA offices in Hlíðarsmári.
We'll begin with an hour-long lecture, followed by light exercise on the Breiðablik sports field in Fífan.

Bicycle Repair Courses
The Education Fund (Starfsmenntasjóður) of FÍA, in collaboration with Iðan Education Centre, offers FÍA members a course on bicycle repairs – in preparation for the summer!
The first course is held on 8. May, suitable for beginners and those who haven’t been very active on the repair side of things. The latter is held on 23. May, aimed at those who are more advanced when it comes to repairs and also suitablefor those who participated in the first course.
In both courses we recommend that you bring your own bike.

Bicycle Maintenance I

Course Description: The course will cover basic bicycle maintenance and upkeep. We’ll look at gear settings, brakes, and how to check bicycles to make sure they are safe to use.
We’ll go over wear surfaces, different gear-shifting systems and how they work, and different types of brake systems and how they work.

Course Description: The course will cover mountain bikes and how they are set up. We’ll go over shock absorbers, tubeless tire repairs and how to set these up. We’ll go over different kinds of tires, what they are best suited for and different benefits. We’ll go over repairing of the wheel and other aspects. The course is advanced, delving deeper into repairs.

Calling for candidates for the Board of the Pension Fund
The EFÍA (FÍA Pension FUND) Election Committee is now calling for candidates to sit on the board of EFÍA for the 2019-2021 term of office.
Following an additional annual meeting of EFÍA last February, changes were made to the Fund‘s bylaws so that members of EFÍA will now vote for their board members directly.
According to articles 4.1 and 4.1a of EFÍA‘s bylaws, members of the fund shall vote for two board members and one reserve board member to sit on the board for a period of two years.
Those who wish to become candidates must meet the following conditions:
- Be a member of the EFÍA Pension Fund.
- Be financially independent and have the required knowledge and job experience, according to article 31 of laws nr. 129/1997 regarding the mandatory ensurance of pension rights and operations of pension funds, and article 6 of the Financial Supervisory Authority‘s regulations nr. 180/2013, and the in general to meet the standards for qualification and fitness of board members, according to aforementioned laws, regulations of the FSA; and bylaws of the Pension Fund.
- Be prepared to pass a qualification evaluation of the Financial Supervisory Authority.
- Hand in candidacy papers within a given deadline.
Those who are interested can submit their candidacy by sending an email with the requested information (see EFÍA’s website), to the Election Committees email: kjornefnd@efia.is.
The deadline for handing in a candidacy is 17:00 o'clock on May 7th, 2019.
The Election Committee
The purpose of the Election Committee is to ensure that the members of EFÍA have the requisite grounds to make an informed decision when voting for board members. One of their roles is to manage the voting process, and to submitt a reasoned evaluation on the qualification of candidates regarding their fitness to be a part of the committee. The Committees evaluation is advisory.
The Election Committee will call for and review candidates in terms of qualifications and experience necessary to sit on the board of the pension fund and also to consider the combination of the board in terms of variety, qualifications, and experience.
Regarding WOW air
Recent news regarding WOW air remind us of how quickly winds can change change within the aviation industry. Our thoughts and sympathy are now with WOW air pilots, who are members of the Icelandic Pilots' Union, and have now lost their jobs, as well as with other WOW air employees.

Job Burnout: Postponed till Thursday!
The lunchmeeting on job burnout, that was supposed to take place on Tuesday, has been postponed until Thursday, 21. March. Sigrún Ása Þórðardóttir, psychologist, will tell us all about this special type of work-related stress that is job burnout, which can affect both your physical and mental health.
The lecture will be held in Icelandic.
