Using Reykjavík Airport (BIRK) as Alternate

From The Safety Committee of the Icelandic Airline Pilots' Association (ÖFÍA)

Throughout the years crew have been able to rely on Reykjavik airport as a suitable alternate. However, in recent years we have seen restrictions imposed on the airport, notably the airport's operating hours.

According to AIP Iceland, the airport is closed to all traffic from 2300 to 0700 on weekdays, and from 2300 to 0800 during weekends and some public holidays.

Reykjavik airport is available to open with Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) outside of operational hours with 15 minutes prior notice for e.g. international flights that file/use Reykjavik as an alternate airport. See here.

In the last 18 months we have seen two incidents where pilots' expectations of this service have not been met as Isavia has not been able to prepare the airport to be usable within the 15 minutes stated in the AIP.

The Safety Committee of the Icelandic Airline Pilots' Association (ÖFÍA) would like to urge pilots to exercise extreme caution in relying on Reykjavik as an alternate outside operating hours if icing and reduced braking action is likely.
